Dear RedHat list:
I down loaded a Netscape rpm from the internet
using Windows and copied it to a home directory on Linux partition. In the
home directory I typed "rpm -i netsca~1.rpm" I got in response
"error : cannot open file netsca~1.rpm"
I then tried to uninstall it with "rpm -e netsca~1.rpm" and got in response
"failed to open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm"

"cannot open /var/lib/rpm/ /packages.rpm

Same deal when trying to install "imap-4.1.Beta-8.i386.rpm" from the RH cdrom.
I am relatively green to computers and am likely missing something
embarrassingly obvious.
I would be greatful for any advice. Anonymity eases embarrassment.

Cordially, R Arab
