Can this situation happen even without any interface using DHCP? As far as I know, it isn't being used. But at least one of the problem hosts had a remote X session going when the network was terminated. Might there be some kind of secret lock or socket connection still being held? I've looked diligently and so far haven't found anything that makes sense to my limited knowledge in the area.
