If it bothers you, why not start a project to code an "easier" way to do
it... (I've been thinking the same sorts of things myself) - a number of
projects have swum around in my mind, to resolve this like maybe looking
at putting together a "cut-back" version of linux with bare essentials
and then the means to easily install each item one-at-a-time (rather
than the en-masse information-overload strategy used by red-hat)...maybe
by hacking the rpm format a little (I dunno)

linux is the way it is because a bunch of people freely donated their
time and programming talents to put together a robuts operating
system... it still needs further donations to make it as "nice" as
win95... (though win95/nt gives you "nice" things at the expense of
stability, efficiency, flexibility, customisability, etc... (as well as
just plain expense!!!)  )  8-)
