hello: -- I have been trying to get ethernet networking up for the last couple
of days.

Currently I have compilied the kernal for ethernet support and 3 com support for
my
3c509b cards. -- Now the kernal sees the cards at boot up properly. In addition
I have
configured the host tables and the eth0 interface using netconfig in the control
panel.

I am using the standard bogus IP addresses
198.168.16.2 and 198.168.16.1 for my two machines with user names
joseph.localdomain
and abraham.localdomain respectively.

I use a netmask of 255.255.255.0 for both machines.

when I activate the eth0 interface ifconfig shows that the interface is started
successfully.
(and the lights on my hub glow a nice shade of green )

eth0 is identified with the proper IP and Netmask, On both machines.

However when I try to connect to either machine from it's partner using telnet
I get
the message "route not found" . And Ping does not successfully send any packets.

What is it I am missing?

P.S. As always any correct answers win a Happy Meal. ( offer limited to the first
10 correct
solutions) :-)

Jimbo.

Additional info, I am running redhat 4.1 on a pentium and pentium II system. and
the hub
is a Lynxsys 5 port Workgroup hub.
