A non-software idea that I can think of :-

I also recently used passive FTP for transfers via a ISDN router set up
to use Network Address Translation (NAT). My connections would also hang
after a certain download file length. Funnily enough it turned out to be
the router trying to do bonded ISDN. It was trying to negotiate a second
B channel with my ISP (who was correctly rejecting it) and then hanging
when it couldnt get any further. So you could look for that, but you are
probably aware if your card/TA/router is trying to do that!
