There is really nothing you need to do beforehand. If you don't have X
running on the machine, you should manually check out the following files:
/etc/sysconfig/*
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/*
/etc/hosts
You can do something like "grep <ipaddr> /etc/sysconfig/*" to find the
files you need to modify, where <ipaddr> is your current IP address.
As for supporting another ethernet card, you shouldn't have to recompile.
And are you sure you want to use a 3c503? That is a really old card, and
the $20 investment on a new card would be well worth it.
Assuming you know the base address and IRQ for the card, you can add that
information to /etc/conf.modules, following the format that is already
there for your current card.
That's really all that needs to be done. Reboot, and enjoy! :)
