i wouldn't be that quick to condemn.  yes, there are many immature
drivers, but there are also combinations that work quite well.  if you
really want 100 Mbps, then cardbus is really the best way to get there.  
in my I7k, i am currently using an Ositech Jack of Spades 10/100 + 56k
modem, and it works great (red hat 6.0, kernel 2.2.12).  ditto for the
Adaptec 1480 SCSI controller - i've gotten 14 MB/s through it.  so my
cardbus cards are rock-solid; i couldn't imagine "dumping" them.  just be
sure to have the latest pcmcia package.
