no setup signature found

I recently recompiled my kernel.  Upon reboot I am told:

  "No setup signature found..."

Then booting halts.

I've never had this problem before.  I copied the new zImage and
System.map to the appropriate location and made the appropriate
symlinks.  I then ran /sbin/lilo and rebooted.  Upon reboot it halted
with the aforementioned error message.

Any ideas?
