And so it should have been.  Did it actually work?  What does
'/sbin/runlevel' tell you?  If it doesn't say "N 5", then you aren't in
runlevel 5.  Look for a line like:
id:5:initdefault:
in /etc/inittab.

As root, you can also 'telinit 5'
