Yes it is tricky. And I don't understand how it *ever* worked

Before I get into it, let me thank *everyone* who responded
with helpful suggestions! Its one of the things that makes linux
so rewarding!

The problem was this: I think that in my struggles to get the
ATI Rage128 Pro to work under XF86 I had ran one to many of
the various "X configurators" (I eventually gave up and created
one by hand) and the symlinks got hosed.

It ended up with /etc/X11/X => /usr/X11R6/bin/X => /usr/X11R6/XF86_I128,
which did not exist. I linked it to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFCom_Rage128 and
all was good. It now boots up as expected

Thanks again all!

!-So, you can 'startx', but init 5 doesn't get you X? Very tricky...
!-
!-OK, so what is /etc/X11/prefdm linked to? And what does 'grep "^x:5:"
!-/etc/inittab' tell you?
!-
!-Try symlinking /etc/X11/prefdm to either /usr/bin/kdm or
!-/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm
