Yes it is tricky. And I don't understand how it *ever* worked Before I get into it, let me thank *everyone* who responded with helpful suggestions! Its one of the things that makes linux so rewarding! The problem was this: I think that in my struggles to get the ATI Rage128 Pro to work under XF86 I had ran one to many of the various "X configurators" (I eventually gave up and created one by hand) and the symlinks got hosed. It ended up with /etc/X11/X => /usr/X11R6/bin/X => /usr/X11R6/XF86_I128, which did not exist. I linked it to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFCom_Rage128 and all was good.
