You have to care about interrupts given at boot. Try to "cat" the file
/proc/interrupts to see the IRQ on which it is setup the NIC before using
the gnome util then redo it just after using it. If it is changed insert it
into kernel boot parameters.
The 3c509b works in my box with IRQ 9 while the RH set it on the 11 and it
didn't work.
