Are you running kppp within kde or inside another wm? It made a difference
when I used to use it. Within kde it would save the password and any other
settings I made, in any other wm it would remain stupid.

I had to go into kde, set the settings, then go into what I really wanted
to use and it would work like I wanted.

All kde stuff worked  like that for me.
