Find an ftp mirror site for RedHat 6.0 and download october-gnome. The gnome/X that comes with RH 6.0 is slightly broken. I used to use it and although my problems weren't half as sever as yours, october-gnome has fixed all of them (except the font problem which I fixed myself).
