atz for leased line courier v.everything?

hi

I have a leased line with courier v.everything modems at both ends
SO: RedHat 6.0

the originator has AT command enabled and connects just fine.
when I start the system pppd gets LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests.

After I get minicom up and send ATZ to the modem pppd connects just fine.

So I ask, how do I send ATZ to the modem at startup ?
Will the modem accept ATZ if it is connected or connecting ?
