I've been doing it the same way as the original poster (mrproper, xconfig,
dep, clean, modules, modules_install,  bzImage) and have _NEVER_ had it
undo what xconfig did. I've done dozens of compiles in that order without
problems, other than some misconfigurations on my part that resulted in
compile errors.
