/etc/aliases?

hi,

Just wanted to ask what the above is for? how is it formatted?
I'm told to make an alias to .qmail-root when installing qmail...
and they kept refering to /etc/aliases ....
(its not the alias ls ='ls -p' right?)
Any HOWTOs on this ?
