Thanks for saying that...I did mention that I am new to this, right?

I checked my moem in "The big list" as suggested by another user 
of this list, and it was marked "OK."  It is, as you presume, an 
internal.

It is made by Jaton Corporation, uses the Cirrus Logic CL-MD3452 
DSP chipset,with 16C550A/16C450 Register Compatible Buffered 
UART
16 Bit ISA Parallel Bus and Plug and Play Interface,

I did not get specific with the problem itself, but did offer to post 
from the log on my computer, if that was deemed something that 
would be helpful.  I stated fairly clearly that I was interested in 
making sure 
a> my modem WOULD INDEED WORK with Linux; and 
b> I don't have an IRQ problem with the current setup.  any help 
you can give based on this and my other post(s) would be greatly 
appreciated.
