I cannot answer your question but an easy alternative that I can recommend
is the free portsentry package which can be configured to drop the return
route to the attacker. To the attacker, your machine just disappears like
it went down or was never there. And you get a nice message in your log.
There is a risk of a DoS attack so handle with care. Or, better yet, read
the docs.
