Ooops, I'm a dummy... Okay, so my xfs was not running, so of course I was having X startup problems... I thought I checked that... Okay, so xfs won't run unless I comment out the ttfont directory entry in the /etc/X11/fs/config file - so that seems to be where the problem is... At least now I now have Type1 fonts again... Are there some tt fonts that don't work? None have upper case in the name (which was suggested as a problem). If I don't have any luck I'll try xfstt - but these things get to me :-) I mean it WAS working yesterday, so why not today... all I've done is run ttmkfdir (and forgot to back up fonts.dir!) thanks for all the hints guys!!! BTW, the windows thing was a joke. Since the latest kernal now supports those crummy 'scsi' card that come with HP scanners I am totally free of windows on this machine. There's no going back now. tim -- --------------------------------------------------------- Tim & Therese Fairchild Atchafalaya Border Collies.
