Back-up hard drive

We run a Maxtor 2.1GB hard drive as the master, with a SCSI slave. I want to mirror the master drive so as to have a back-up in the event of a hard drive failure. This way I can just swap over the disks. Do I have to use the same make and model hard drive, and as it needs to have the identical records as the master. I would assume that I need the partitions to be identical, is this true?
