Hi folks, ok, I ran into the following problem: In my box I have an ATAPI CD-ROM, which is the only (E)IDE device I have (drives are SCSI). Recently, it's been acting up a bit and starts "slipping" when reading certain CDs (among them the official RHL 5.2 CDs... <sigh>), i.e. it tries to spin up and fails (as the CD slips and doesn't get up to speed). While I know how to fix this mechanical problem, this situation has presented me a Linux problem as well: If the "slipping" occurs during a mount, the mount fails (obviously) - and screws up the whole CD mounting royally. After a mount that failed, I can no longer mount any CDs - I get messages saying that "/dev/cdrom is mounted already or mount point busy". Of course, I tried several different mount points - no luck. I also had a look at /etc/mtab, but no hint of cdrom (or hdc, which cdrom points to) in there. Is there any way of "resetting" this short of rebooting? So far, only a reboot would remedy this situation (even dropping to runlevel one didn't help) - which is highly annoying. Any ideas? Thomas P.S.: I've heard of "lsof". Problem is: It doesn't work on my system - I'd have to recompile the kernel, as after the last recompile I forgot to copy "System.map" (which isn't mentioned in the user manual, grrr....) and I don't have the correct one anymore... :-( -- "Look, Ma, no obsolete quotes and plain text only!"
