Its running as default, system is set to Runlevel 5.
Make sense though, the etc dir was where I changed the inittab ;-)
is there no way to change this without changing the runlevel, making the
directory change and changing the runlevel back?
Does anyone know where the default dir is being held?

Did you startx from /etc? If so, just exit X, cd ~, then startx again.
