I've used bladeenc, but just recently discovered LAME:
        http://www.sulaco.org/mp3/
However, I actually wound up using a variant precompiled for Linux
known as NotLame:
        http://hive.me.gu.edu.au/not_lame/

In trials on my K6-2 450MHz machine, NotLame ran faster than real time,
and sounded much better than bladeenc at low bitrates (e.g., 64k). By
comparison, bladeenc was at least 50% slower than real time. Bladeenc
is supposedly engineered to sound better for bitrates of at least 160k,
but I'm interested in lower bitrates (e.g., 128k for mp3.com), so I
didn't try them.
