/etc/mtab lists currently mounted volumes, so running things like
linuxconf, mount, or umount could modify the file.
/etc/adjtime is modified every time the system boots, because
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit runs 'hwclock --adjust', which updates /etc/adjtime.
