What is missing with IMAP?  That's what IMAP does - store messages on the
server (and allow for folders and subfolders).

LDAP is the 'Lightweight Directory Access Protocol' - basically, it's a
standard way to access information in a directory.  It is not a directory in
and of itself, just the access protocol.
