Using the IP of the firewall should work, if it doesn't something isn't
configured quite right. When you say it doesn't work, what do you mean?
In your /etc/named.conf did you list your ISP's DNS as forwarders (if not
your machine will resolve by hitting the net, which will make a slight
difference in speed for lookups)?

Check that your firewall scripts allow access from the LAN on port 53.

Your link to your ISP must be up for anything not in the DNS cache to
resolv....
