Ok, last ppp message of the day, I swear. RH 6.1 on Intel. Stock install.
Running IP Masq as outlined in the Masw HOWTO.

What is the "right" way to start a PPP connection from the command line?
The PPP Howto describes scripts which don't exist in the RH install (e.g.,
/etc/ppp/ppp-on) so I'm guessing that they've made it "easier" and I AM NOW
FULLY READY to stop fighting this thing and have it just work every single
time. I used to do this:

cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
./ifup ppp0

But at some point this just broke and pppd now spews endless "cannot find
secrets" messages. This despite trying to rectify matters manually, with
netconf, with Linuxconf, and with the Gnome "connection wizard". Further,
I'm pretty sure that the secrets are there because I can coax pppd to make
a connection using the same secrets file--just not when I invoke it through
ifup.

Summary:

What is the RIGHT way to up ppp0 (from the command line)?
Why isn't pppd looking for secrets in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets where there is
the line "amead * <secret>"?
Where is ppp-watcher documented and what is it supposed to do?
Why does each tool produce a different line in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets with a
different format?
Why does this !^%$@%$# process break every once in a while when I do
innocuous things like reboot or close X and restart it?
Is there any RH-specific HOWTO on PPP?

THANKS!
