There are other solutions out there I'm sure.  The easiest is with a hub
even for a "peer" network for file and print sharing.  Only one hub
should be needed for a network of three or four computers.

If every computer has a network card installed in it you could purchase
a D-Link minihub.  They run around $40 or so and most can handle 5
computer connections (the low end ones).  I've got a couple and they are
pretty good.  

After a few years of running a home network I'm looking at moving from
10BaseT to 100BaseT which means replacing all my nics and getting a
really nice hub.  Ovislink is one of the better ones out there and not
super expensive.

Basically it boils down to how much you are willing to spend.
