I'll second this. I've been using Mylex DAC960 and AcceleRAID cards
in systems here and absolutely love the DAC960 driver. It is a block
driver that provides ONLY SCSI RAID service so you can't hang a CDROM
off it. It is rock solid and provides a /proc interface to query the
status of the system and issue any commands needed to replace failed
drives and rebuild the RAID logical disks. I've been running one in a
usenet news server for almsot a year and haven't needed to take the
system down for ANY single SCSI disk failure so far. Just swap it out
using the frames/carriers we mount our disks in and issue the rebuild
command to the card.
The Mylex AcceleRAID cards are add-on cards for certain motherboards
that utilize the on-board SCSI chip logic and adds RAID capabilities
to it. They are somewhat cheaper than a full-blown Extreme RAID
controller.
