It depends on what you mean by "better". If you don't need extremely high
volume or groupware features, then sendmail and a generic POP3/IMAP server
that's included in almost all Linux distros should be able to handle the
job. Unless your needs are complex, sendmail's default config whould be 90%
of what you need.

If you need the groupware features of Exhange, then HP's OpenMail may be
more appropriate. It is a drop-in replacement for Exchange but HP does not
market it very much because they don't want to piss off Microsoft. HP
recently released a version that will run on Linux. The few reviews I've
read have been very positive.
