You don't need apmd on a server.  True enough.

However, this could be a desktop machine, like my dual celeron box.  In
that case, and you want to have the machine power off when you halt it,
pass "apm=smp-power-off" to the kernel.  Make sure you've got the option
CONFIG_APM_POWER_OFF=y in your kernel config.
