XFree86 -configure does create working files on most cards, but it leaves
you alone with anything other than the graphics card (try XFree86
-configure on a machine with a non-us keyboard, for example).
Also, XFree86 -configure tends to list every mouse as "Auto", which causes
breakages on a variety of hardware. Much like xf86config, it's a nice
start for vi /etc/X11/XF86Config, but that's about all it is.
