%-> DNS runs fine. Like I said this slowdown wasn't happening under 6.1,
%-> only after i went up to 6.2. I had the same problem with Slackware 6.9B
%-> which disappeared when i went to Slackware 7.0 and also under RH 5.1
%-> when i went to 5.2. Debian was doing it as well under the ppp-2.3.8
%-> until I upgraded that to 2.3.10.
Hmmm... well, a NIC driver issue then? ::: grasping wildly for straws :::
%-> Didn't think about that. just added it in.
You need to echo '1' into /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_sack ; tcp_timestamps and
tcp_window_scaling as well, unless it's already been done.
%-> Yes sir.
Good, good, we don't want to burden the 'Net with tiny MTUs leading to
excessive fragmentation... ;-)
%-> Always a possibility with GTE. :-)
Well, speaking as a fellow DSL user, there are heaps of things that can go
wrong. My RADSL connection is PPP over ATM and the ATM network has had no
end of problems. During the last bout of connection headaches, I was allowed
into the local exchange to take a look at the gear that connects me to the
155Mbps backbone. The trunk card that my line was hooked up to was faulty,
producing spurious errors that took a fair bit of effort to track down. The
telco here has been pretty responsive in sorting out the problems, but I
can't help thinking that I'm paying to be a guinea pig at times...:-}
