Linux works like a champ with CTVM (ex-pressnet.com)

I just upgraded my Firewall to Mandrake 7.02 to boot. Again no problems!

The error you are seeing indicates that your modem is ECHOING back all
commands sent to it.

Either you are initializing it to HALF duplex or you have your
initialization string wrong.

BTW: When you get things running do yourself a BIG favor...

1) Run Squid
2) Run your own DNS

You'll get MUCH better performance than CTVM's own servers...

Subject: Help: Linux and hybrid cable modems

Has anyone in Montgomery County (MD) been able to get Linux to work with
CTVM's setup? I've been trying to get this hybrid setup working for a
week with no results. And the Cable Modem setup HOWTO is of no use.

So far my guess is that I am running into a PAP problem where my script is
simply wrong; I have the proper values in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and
ip-up.local. My eth0 is set to 10.0.0.1 with mask 255.255.255.240/bcast
10.0.0.15. I'm getting these errors under pppd:

Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated.
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
Serial link disconnected.
Exit.

I've been using the ppp-on and ppp-on-dialog scripts located in
/usr/doc/ppp-2.3.10/scripts. According to a page I found
(http://www.coopzone.connectfree.co.uk/e0.html) you're not supposed to
have anything after a CONNECT has been issued. I did that and I was still
getting the above error.

A coworker told me that he tried to use an ISDN modem with a cable modem
for upstream data (I have no idea why) but he told me that ISDN modem did
not support PAP under Linux. I am just using a generic (now defunct Atlas
Peripherals) 56k modem that's been working for two years now. Am I wrong
in thinking PAP is platform-independent?

Just to see what was up I called CTVM and asked them how they verified
users. They said they used PAP with a Cisco modem bank (no funky M$-CHAP
stuff).

I used minicom just for yucks and giggles and it did ask me for a username
and password (is this significant? Does this mean it uses both terminal
verification and PAP?).

Anyone have ideas???
