The O'Reilly DNS & BIND book is also a good reference, but make sure you
get the latest edition that covers BIND8 (the 3rd edition, I think)

You're assumption about forwarders is correct. Two things that make
forwarders useful that spring to mind are:
1) Use them to create a larger pool of cached nslookups.
2) Use them in conjunction with firewall rules to help protect your local
DNS server a bit more by only allowing DNS requests/answers to come from
specific IP addresses.
