Go to this site, it has a newer version of MySQL and it works great (Its
also an RPM).
ftp://duke.eburg.com     look in mycontrib

Also you may want to see if MySQL is running (ps -A) and if it is, you may
want to make a symlink like so...

ln -s /tmp/mysql.sock /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

some of the localhost functions seen to look for the socket in /tmp
