FWIW. I ran located the following correspondance in the linux-kernal archive:

http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/9910.2/0508.html
which assigned the cause to "magicdev," a package that is part of Gnome/GMC
that plays CD's automagically, etc. Solution was to remove (with nodeps)
magicdev. Everything seems to be working happily now.
Sorry to have wasted bandwidth by answering my own question. Maybe it will help
somebody else.
