Just as a follow up, I never could get / to unmount. Tried 'halt', got
the same message. So rebooted (with SysRq), got dumped to a root shell
due to FS errors. Ran 'e2fsck -c -f', which found at least a zillion
errors of all kinds. System then rebooted OK. I'm sure 'rpm -Va' will
be interesting. All other FSs seem OK. So I have no idea at this point
what is the cause, but this drive is testing my patience. I have done
some large file copying without incident. First sign of further
trouble, it's new drive time.
