USB devices supported ?

Hi,

anyone know if USB devices are supported in RH6.1 / 6.2 ? in the default
kernel or do I have to recompile ? 
Basically, I'm looking into USB CDRW drives and hope to see it being
supported on RH at least....
Anyone had experience with USB CDRW? Or scanners? 
I'm interested in Compo, Mitsumi and Ricoh (my original was HP but it's too
pricy for my budget)
