Must be something not quite right with the system. I run a P120 with just 32meg
ram (and another has just 16meg) without too many problems. Up 24/7 and running
as an SMB/FTP/etc server for my little network of 3 PC's.
I have 128-256 meg of swap on the boxes (one might only have 60 meg, but it's
mostly in winstuff)
I use KDE for ease of use - My wife and kids use the PC's as well :-) Tho the
kids are quite good on the command line, esp when it comes to running quake or
descent.
I recently dropped Netscape Mail because it dragged the system down when it was
open 24/7. I now just use KMail or whatever and only open Netscape NAVIGATOR
(not communicator) when I need to. I can have several of the 'minor' apps open
at once and GIMP is okay.
The box starts to slow if I have NS open for a while, esp if Gimp is running
as well. Startoffice is best run with no other major apps competing for
resources. WP8 isn't so bad.
Otherwise it's a nice box to use and relatively smooth. At the moment, say, I
have GIMP, a few copies of KLyx, KMail, several xterms (or kterms), a couple of
text editors, kedit etc... Usual server stuff running in the background, SMB,
NFS, FTP, even playing with apache... Running lovely and smooth. Even had
Navigator open til recently with no probs.
I get a little bit of swapping when I shift a few desktops, but nothing major.
According to free I'm using about 75meg swap, but doesn't seem to be worrying
things.
Is this something to do with the HD? I have a nice new 8.4 gig drive and the
swap on this machine is a single 256meg partition (I tried this as an
experiment when I last installed) The max I've used was about 110meg...
Really I only get problems when Navigator is chewing 40-50 meg extra mem or I
have some process gone wild that's chewing CPU time...
Check top (or the K process manager) and see if something is chewing all the
CPU. WP8 does this to me sometimes as do various other apps when they go wrong.
That's something that makes my box crawl.
