We have a RedHat Linux mail gateway which receives all incoming mail from
the outside and then relays most of it to other machines, including mostly
Micro$oft Exchange servers for Outlook victims.
As a result of last week's "ILOVEYOU" messages, the people who run the
Exchange systems have asked if we could filter the incoming mail based on
subject or attachment names/suffixes. With virus/worm incidents of this
type with rapid propagation, the damage is already done before Macaffee
produces an update for their virus scanner, even if their website were not
completely swamped.
The suggestions using procmailrc rules and sendmail.cf rules seem to work
fine for locally-delivered mail (mail boxen on the sendmail server machine),
but not for messages relayed to other machines, such as the Exchange
servers. For instance, mail might be addressed to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
and 'someuser' is aliased to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
Helpful suggestions or SPECIFIC references to Bat Book secions or moongroup
mailhelp archives would be appreciated. I haven't quite mastered the relay
vs. delivery processes. Sendmail is sendmail-8.9.3-20.
