On a small setup like that I'd definitely do the setup myself. Depending
on how you want to use that machine, I'd make three partitions:
- Swap
The size depends on the main memory of that machine. With anything
<32MB I'd go for 2xMain Memory, above that 1xMain Memory.
- /home
Not *really* necessary, but it's so much more convenient in case you
want to upgrade the system at some stage. Size depends on what you want
to do with that machine. I'd try something between 50MB and 100MB
- /
All the rest
As for installation: Judging from my own experience with small
installations, I'd say, go for "Select packages manually" (or whatever
that point is called) and unselect *everything* - the installer will
then only install the very basic packages. Once booted up, you can then
add everything you need package by package using rpm, which will give
you maximum control over the space used. That's how I've done it in the
past.
However, 504MB will be a tight fit, especially, if you intend to use X
and Gnome as well. You won't be able to install many extras. I'm not
even sure whether the space will be enough to install all development
libraries, should you intend to do development on that box.
