Lots of people complain about that, but most all of Red Hat's extras are
modules. I've never seen any real benchmarks to indicate that there is
any performance difference between a packaged kernel and one that has
unneeded modules removed. Would anyone care to find/perform some? :)
If so, I've got kernel rpms based on Red Hat's default, with all of the
additions that you mention (and a few more) at

the CD/DVD support was included in 2.2.16. No patching should have been
required, what did you apply?

I notice the same when building my RPM. Next release won't use Red
Hat's patch, but will have a working module. I currently include the
ALSA sound drivers in addition to OSS, and they seem a better set of
drivers anyway.
