Yes there is broadcast on the lo device.  There is also traffic from
other IP addresses in the 127.0.0.1/8 network.  I don't have a tcpdump
handy, but I think the other IP's are used by portmap and nfs software
on the local machine.  If you'd like to see what goes on there for
yourself, do "tcpdump -i lo" as root.  Let it run for a while, and see
what goes on for yourself.
