That's not the way I understand it. The job of a network hub is to do
crossover from each port to each other port (sorta). It just broadcasts
incoming traffic to all the ports.
A crossover cable should be better than a hub in nearly all cases. With
a crossover cable, a NIC can send and receive at the same time, without
collisions. That's full duplex. On a hub, you either send or recieve,
not both. That's half duplex.

What speeds do you see out of the HUB and the crossover cable? How much
difference is there?
Is the "slow" connection slow to connect, and then fast? Or is it a
very low transfer speed during the entire transfer?
