Are you mapping your linux username to the windoze hostname? What
is in your smbusers file? You don't need to map users if your
windoze box has the same name as the user you are trying to log in
as. My smbusers file looks like this:
# Unix_name = SMB_name1 SMB_name2 ...
#root = administrator admin
ftp = guest
sarnold = rama vishnu edgar
maria = rama vishnu edgar
On the left are the usernames on my server, while each name on the
right is the windoze computer name (and real hostname) of the
client machines. They all dual-boot Linux/samba and windoze OSR2.1
(last rev of 95). Why I added the guest account I have no idea (it
was quite a while back) but samba requires a guest user account for
browsing, so I use ftp instead of nobody.
Depending on which client OS you have, you might need to apply some
M$ system updates to fix some known broken stuff (eg, the
redirector). Check here for 95 system updates (98 also):

Did you have this working with plaintext passwords? Maybe you
should try that first, and then use the "update encrypted" option
to add the passwords to a pristine smbpasswd file.
Just a thought...
