I was wrong.  Module dependencies don't check out "OK" on bootup.  I get the
message: "Can't open /lib/modules/2.2.16-3ktb/ for writing"

I also noticed that there is a link in my boot directory module-info, linked
to module-info-2.2.14-5.0 which was my default kernel and everything works
there if I use the original system map.  I can't find a corresponding
module-info file for my 2.2.16 kernel.  Any help would be appreciated.
