Another possibility might be that the SVGA rpm isn't installed. When I did
my install of RH6.2, I went with a custom install and this RPM wasn't
selected by default. I thought it was my video card, but then once I
selected that RPM, it let me configure the display to something larger than
640x480.

I think your video card is not supported, meaning you
were able to go xwin but it gives you a default(very
small resolutions) windows resolution.
try to reconfigure your xwin thru "setup" command
noelt.
