If you have X running on the local box, you can use ssh from an xterm, and
run X programs on the remote box and have then be displayed, and accept
input from the local machine.  X does not need to be running on the remote
machne.  The X libs do need to be installed, but you do not need a
functioning X server on the remote machine.  You can ever run X programs
on a remote machine with no display.
