an update on this - it seems that the ne module refuses to load... I
get this error when trying to load the module manually:

[root@server updates]# insmod ne
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_open
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_init
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_close

also getting these in the log files:

Aug 30 16:13:57 server kernel: ne.c: No NE*000 card found at i/o = 0x300
Aug 30 16:13:57 server insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/ne.o:
init_module: Device or resource busy

weird thing is that all I did (I think) to break the ne setup was to
install an updated linuxconf RPM - from 1.17_2 to 1.20_2

why are these symbols unresolved all of a sudden and how do I fix these?

thanks in advance for any assistance! dan.

I'm getting a bit frustrated with all these rpm and linuxconf falling
over type problems. these tools provide a great deal of convenience
in maintaining the system but unfortunately since I've been a bit
reliant on these and haven't done too much software compiling or
loads of manual config file editing (although I do do a fair bit of
config stuff outside of linuxconf) I tend to get a bit stuck when
problems like this crop up... not really sure if there is an answer
to this... just wanted to get it off my chest! :)
